People first came to Australia more then 50thousand years ago. The first Europeans arrived in 1606, descripbing the land as Terra Australis, Incognita, which means " unknown southern land." In 1770, the famous British exploerer Cpt. James Cook mapped the eastern coast nd claimed the land in the name of the king of England.
